This story starts with an irony. We were first introduced to diving on a cruise 10 years ago. It was our first and our last cruise as we learned quickly we were not cruise people. In fact, we vowed to never cruise again. So the idea of a live-aboard never sounded appealing, until we decided we wanted to dive The Great Barrier Reef! So we took a chance and booked a trip to Australia!
It was not so difficult to choose a dive company. There were essentially two nicer live-aboard boats that go all the way up the northern part of the Barrier Reef. We chose to go with Spirit of Freedom (see future review under Travel Map link).
The corals of the Great Barrier Reef are truly amazing. We are not underwater photographers, so our pictures definitely do not do it justice!
The best thing about being on a live-aboard is they really try to take care of all your needs. We called it, the "Cinderella" service.
Not to mention the food was amazing! We tried kangaroo meat (pictured left below).
Another awesome thing that you can do on a live-aboard is get your advanced water diving certification. Since you are diving all the time anyway, why not?
The highlight of trip had to be the Cod Hole dive! Diving with several 30 kg fish was out of this world!
We also had a fun visitor, a playful junior whale shark. One of our biggest regret is not jumping in the water to swim with the whale shark. The boat was already running and the wind was sweeping us towards the reef.
We ended the amazing 3 day diving trip on Lizard Island = paradise.
The Great Barrier Reef, you are truly amazing!
