Although in the same state, the Southwest Colorado has always felt so out of reach for a regular weekend. Finding a long weekend to make the 6-7 hour drive from Denver has been difficult. This Fourth of July, we were able to steal a long enough weekend to make the trek and we had some exciting plans...
This past weekend we decided to tackle another 14er, Mt. Massive. It lies just north of Mt. Elbert and is the 2nd highest peak in Colorado. What we thought was going to be a challenging and long hike turned out to be the most difficult and scariest hike we have ever done...

Living in Colorado, not going outdoors is not an option. There is so much to do year round and so much beauty in the state that it would be a sin to not take advantage of our great outdoors. In the spring shoulder season, we love hiking 14ers and snowboarding down! This season, we decided to tackle Mt. Sherman at 14,035 feet.
Last summer, my friends and I decided to explore the Great Sand Dunes. I had seen so many beautiful pictures and couldn't believe a gem like this existed in our backyard (figuratively speaking).
One of the best things about living in Colorado is there is always something to do year round. During the Winter, there are the obvious winter sports. Colorado is laced with amazing ski resorts and Vail (in our humble opinion) tops them all (with Steamboat Springs coming a close second, and without yet experiencing Crested Butte and Telluride). However, during the Summer, Vail becomes this wild flower, lush green mountains, a "river runs through it" WONDERLAND. Here is why we love vail even better in the summer.
